What Is Mechanical Polishing?

Mechanical polishing is a finishing process that uses progressively finer abrasives to refine the surface of stainless steel.

Depending on the required specification, the process can be used to remove surface imperfections, smooth weld areas, create a consistent grain or achieve a more highly polished appearance.

The result is a cleaner, more uniform surface finish suited to applications where both appearance and workmanship matter.

Mechanical Polishing Process

Our mechanical polishing process combines skilled workmanship with careful surface preparation to achieve a consistent, high quality finish. Each project is assessed individually to ensure the polishing process suits the material, application and required finish.

1. Assess

We review the component, material and required finish to determine the appropriate polishing process.

2. Prepare

Welds, fabrication marks and surface imperfections are carefully prepared where required.

3. Polish

The stainless steel is mechanically polished using the appropriate abrasive stages to progressively refine the surface.

4. Finish & Inspect

The finished component is inspected for consistency and quality before completion or progression to the next stage of production.

Stainless Steel Finishes to Suit Your Project

Different applications call for different surface finishes.

Our team can produce mechanical finishes to suit the required appearance and project specification, including:

  • Satin and brushed finishes – a clean, directional finish commonly used for architectural and commercial stainless steel.
  • Fine polished finishes – a smoother, more refined surface where a higher level of presentation is required.
  • Weld blending and surface refinement – helping fabricated sections achieve a consistent finish across the completed component.

Not sure which finish is right for your application? Our team can help determine the most suitable option.

Mechanical Polishing for Commercial Applications

Our mechanical polishing capabilities support a wide range of stainless steel projects across commercial, architectural and industrial applications.

Because our polishing services are supported by extensive in-house fabrication capabilities, we can manage more of the manufacturing process under one roof — from cutting and welding through to final surface finishing and assembly.

This provides better control over quality, consistency and the finished appearance of your project.
